During the Iranian revolution, women played a significant role in the images and photographs captured during this event, which was less common before. The presence of veiled women, with their distinct and different attire, during the revolution and protests was particularly intriguing for photographers, especially non-Iranian photographers. This article employs Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis method to explore the representation of women in post-revolutionary Iran through the works of photographers Gilles Peress and Christine Spengler. The research aims to uncover and reveal the hidden discourse within these photographs by closely examining visual and textual elements. Fairclough’s approach allows for a comprehensive analysis of the photographers’ creative choices and the underlying discourses. The present study claims that the images captured by these photographers offer unique insights into the multifaceted nature of women’s representation in post-revolutionary Iran. The findings indicate that these two non-Iranian photographers adopt distinct approaches in capturing the complexity of women’s situations during and after the revolution, reflecting diverse perspectives. Furthermore, the analysis of the photographers’ use of visual techniques, symbolism, and framing methods highlights their ability to convey specific narratives and evoke particular logical responses. These techniques contribute to the formation of interpretations and viewers’ understanding of the post-revolutionary conditions. Additionally, the precise analysis of the photographs sheds light on the discursive mechanisms surrounding women’s presence during the Iranian revolution. The research findings suggest that while Spengler’s photographs exhibit a form of empathy with Iranian women, portraying them as active subjects despite their attire, Peress’s images tend to emphasize passivity and marginalization of women.
