Abstract
Awareness of the way social and political themes and issues are represented in literary works is useful in understanding the social and external mechanism of the creation of an artistic work and understanding the literary trends that are the product of discourses. The aim of the study is to explain the socio-political discourses in the novel Chashmhayash (Her Eyes) by Alavi. An artistic work is a product of the artist and the artist is a product of discourses. Therefore, the purpose is to identify the discursive components within which the author and the work are formed. The research method is critical discourse analysis (a combination of the approaches of Norman Fairclough and James Paul Gee). The novel is a fictional story of political fighters against the Reza Shah regime. Considering the fighters' connection with the communists and other evidence, the "Self" discourse in the novel can be considered socialism or Left. The dominant discourse of the country (Pahlavism) is represented as the “other”. There have been criticisms of Reza Shah’s rule, such as the uncovering of the veil, dictatorship, repression and censorship, imprisonment and exile, and killing of politicians and protesters. The Islamist discourse (Shi'ism) is also represented as the “other” and the discourses of secularism and modernism are represented as “Self”. In fact, Alavi and his work are the creation of the conflict between Iranian political discourses in the 1940s. The dominance of new discourses influenced by the West (socialism, secularism, and modernism) over traditional discourses (monarchy and religion) in this work indicates the true state of Iranian society at that time. Intellectuals and the middle class, including artists, writers, scholars, and employees, were more attached to the new discourses. They viewed traditional discourses with a critical or opposing perspective. This is also evident in the novel "Her Eyes".
