Abstract
The film "Two Women," directed by Tahmineh Milani, was released in the late 1970s, coinciding with the rise of the reformists. This period was marked by a special focus on the role of women in the public sphere, and the importance of this issue is evident in the film. Many studies have addressed the representation of women in cinema and analyzed this issue. The aim of this article is to examine and identify the discursive systems present in the film and their relationship with the common discourses of the 1970s and 1980s in Iran. The theoretical framework of this article is based on a three-stage method derived from Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory. The film has been analyzed at three levels: textual, intertextual, and contextual. The film analysis shows that there are three main discourses present in it: traditional discourse, egalitarian discourse, and religious sovereignty discourse. These discourses were simultaneously in conflict with each other in the society of that period. The research findings show that just as the three discourses were in conflict in society at the time the film was made, this situation is also reflected in the film’s atmosphere. In such circumstances, Tahmineh Milani examines the conflict between common discourses and shows how the dominance of traditional and patriarchal discourse affects society, especially women. The discourse of religious sovereignty supports traditional discourse with legal means, and as a result, the egalitarian discourse is simultaneously opposed to both traditional and religious discourses.
